We started our holiday out a little early this year. On Wednesday the 17th we woke up to LOTS of snow and no school. It would have been a great day to just sit at home and relax but that did not happen. Cade and Claire had speech and since their teacher had already braved the snow to get to her office I thought it was the least I could do to travel the couple blocks to her office :) It was interesting trying to fit little bundled children into their car seats!
As soon as their speech was over Jace and I left for our two hour drive to the airport to pick up James and Ashley. Mind you that their flights were not until 9:00 that night but with the snow I was not taking any chances! I wanted to be down there before dark so we planned to just shop around the airport until their fights came in.
Once we got half way to the airport the road were clear and the snow was only rain! I felt a little silly :) Oh well, it was a good shopping trip despite the lack of reason for being so early! James ended up getting an earlier flight but we still had to wait around for Ashley's flight. Once James was there you can only imagine the harassment I got about "what snow?" Well, on the way home he was not so quick to say "what snow?" We hit near blizzard conditions after getting about a quarter of the way home. what should have been a two hour drive turned into four very quickly.
We spent the next two days stuck at home which meant that our winter break from school had begun! It was interesting to get around town with so few people knowing how to actually drive in the snow. We did not go out often but did make it to church and were able to grab those few last minute items from the grocery store. Oh and since the base was closed due to the weather ... James never even had to go into work after getting back home! What a treat to have him for such a long vacation time after he had just been away.
We thought that the snow would be gone in just a day or two which is normal for here but it wasn't. It continued to snow throughout the week off and on. At church the Sunday before Christmas the pastor said, "for those of you who have children praying for a white Christmas, would you just let them open their gifts already!" It was funny. We had few people in church but then we had extras as well. Many churches cancelled services for that day. I had half thought that we should not go but then my mom mentioned that she planned on going shopping that afternoon and that she would feel bad going shopping in the snow and not to church :)
Oh, I forgot to mention that my parents managed to make it in-between storms! They came in on Saturday as we were having our Christmas brunch with Curt and Susan. We have made it a tradition to have brunch with Curt and Susan the weekend before Christmas since they are busy with her family during Christmas and by the time they come on Christmas, we have many others around our home celebrating. It is a nice way for it to just have some quiet time. It was fun this year as we made omelets boiled in a bag. It was great to add all our own toppings and boil our bags side by side!
Cade and Claire were most excited about the food ... NOT! They had a great time opening their first Christmas gift of the season! They had gotten a whole array of coloring items and had to quickly sit down to get going on their masterpieces. Tori took some extra special time to spend with Uncle Curt teaching him how to crochet :) It was very sweet. It was a beautiful day with snow on the ground and the sun in the sky until the afternoon.
Just as I went to take pictures of my friend and her family for their Christmas card the sun snuck behind the clouds. We ran over to our next "big" town (which means it has more than a WalMart :) and did a bit of shopping for a Christmas party we were to have a couple days later for the men that James works with. My parents met us there and headed back to our house with our kids just as another snow storm began. It was a crazy week!
